2018 Sculling Programs

In sculling, each rower holds 2 oars and rows in small boats. UVRF owns many sculling boats, including singles (one person), doubles (2 person), and quads (4 person) that are available to club members under certain conditions. If you are already a sweep rower, sculling is an excellent way to develop boat "feel," balance and technical skills. Learn-to- Scull clinics are available for first-time scullers. Free Sweep-to- Scull clinics are available for experienced sweep rowers.

Using Club Sculling Equipment

Club boats are available to members who have EITHER: a) registered for a paid sweep or sculling program; OR b) rented rack space; OR c) paid the club sculling fee (Adults $175/Juniors $100 for the season). Club members have the privilege of using club singles, and doubles and quads throughout the summer season (roughly from the first week of June through mid-September). See Use of Club Singles and Doubles for more information. Please note that use of the club’s racing doubles, and quad requires additional certification. See Sculling Equipment Certification to learn more about using this equipment.

While Juniors are welcome to sign up for these clinics, we encourage you to view the Junior Sculling programs on the separate Juniors tab.

Sweep-to-Scull Clinics

This free 1.5-hour clinic provides an introduction to sculling for sweep rowers who want to learn to scull and who are current members of UVRF. You will learn:

  • Boat handling skills
  • River etiquette
  • Navigation
  • Water safety
  • Basics of the sculling stroke
  • Orientation to club sculling equipment and sculling policies

To arrange to take a captain's test, email UVRF at  .
